Educational Events Director

I'm Molly Breazeale, and I have the pleasure of serving as your Educational Events Director for HLWG this year!

While initially, many of us were attracted to the beauty and the amenities of our community, it's the relationships we build over time that make us proud to call Hampton Lake our home.

I've personally learned so much from the people I've met here and the adventures we've shared during my nearly six years in this community. I'm looking forward to expanding that circle and creating opportunities for us all to learn and grow together.

Education and learning take place in a wide variety of ways. We can benefit from the expertise of guest speakers, work together in smaller groups for self-development or learn a craft, take field trips and so much more. The plan this year will include a mix of different event types to find something for all.

Got an idea, or something you would like to see as an upcoming event? Please don't hesitate to reach out and let me know!

In friendship,

Molly Breazeale

Upcoming Events and Ongoing

October 16th - It's Never too Late to Begin Again, a six week course at Fish Tales.

Did you know that 10% of what we learn comes from formal education, 20% learning from others, and 70% from actual experience?  As adults, we really learn best by doing something new.

That's why we are following this framework in a six week, small group series to rediscover our passions and creativity, by learning from others and coming prepared each week to share our experiences.

Participation in this course requires the purchase of the book, It's Never Too Late to Begin Again by Julia Cameron, a commitment to complete brief assignments, and to attend five of the six sessions.

No matter where you are in your life journey, I promise you will discover something new.

General Meeting - November 19th

The next General Meeting will be held on Tuesday November 19th from 6:30-8:30PM in the Barn. The theme will be Thanksgiving related, we're planning on having John Sudol talk about Fire Safety (think candles, and deep frying a turkey). As the holiday season approaches, it's important to ensure our homes are safe and our loved ones are protected. Join us for an informative presentation designed to provide valuable tips on preventing fires, handling emergencies, and keeping your home and family safe during this festive time of year.

On his 50th birthday, Mr. Sudol decided to join the local volunteer fire department, where he completed four months of training and began responding to fire calls. Soon thereafter, he was elected to the Board of Fire Commissioners and served as Chairman for three years. He is most proud of responding to over 1,200 fire calls in a seven-year period and being nominated by his peers for the honor of “Fireman of the Year.”

He plans to speak about what he learned from over 1,200 fire calls while serving in a NJ volunteer fire department.  The goal is to help you understand more about fire prevention and home safety.  Topics to be discussed include:

  1. Why are fires today drastically different from 25 years ago?
  2. What are the relevant threats in the Lowcountry (besides home fires), and how can we mitigate them?
  3. What are some specific tips for the holiday season regarding home safety?

Past Events

September 18th - Demystifying Artificial Intelligence

During a recent Lunch and Learn session, David Nelems provided insightful information on the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in our daily lives. The event attracted 88 women who were eager to understand the evolving role of AI technology. Nelems distinguished between two main types of AI:

  1. Conversational AI: This includes technologies like Siri and Alexa, which are designed to respond to voice commands and perform simple tasks based on pre-defined programming. They are primarily reactive and follow a set script or responses.

  2. Generative AI: Unlike conversational AI, generative AI can engage in more complex interactions, creating content, and generating responses based on the context of the conversation. This type of AI learns from the data it’s exposed to and can produce human-like text, images, and even audio. Examples include advanced language models and AI platforms that assist in creative tasks.

David emphasized how generative AI has the potential to revolutionize various industries by enhancing productivity, creativity, and decision-making processes. He also discussed potential challenges such as ethical considerations, data privacy, and the need for responsible AI use.

The session concluded with an interactive Q&A where attendees explored how they could leverage AI in their personal and professional lives, expressing excitement about the future possibilities this technology holds.

October 29th - Haunted Happenings of Bluffton, SC on the "Scream Porch."

This Halloween season, Bluffton's own "Real Historian," Michael Reynolds, stepped into the spotlight, delighting members with his eerie tales of haunted happenings around the area. Renowned for his magnetic storytelling style, Reynolds told tales that blended Bluffton’s rich history with the paranormal.

On October 29th, almost 90 attendees gathered to sip on cider and listen to Michael on the "SCREAM" porch—aptly named when it transforms into a Halloween haven of ghostly decorations. As the historian tells it, Bluffton is home to numerous lingering spirits, and his stories hint at the uncanny mysteries of those who never truly left.
